Wishes from the Heart

A dog stopped barking at a cat in a tree,
Sniffed once then trotted over to see,
What made the thump he’d heard in the night?
“It’s a star,” he growled, “Now that’s not right!”
The cat more curious now than scared,
Climbed down the tree as far as she dared,
“A star?” she meowed, licking one paw, then two;
“What a mess, what a fuss, such a hullabaloo!
Out of the dark jumped a big fat toad,
He croaked, “Out of my way; you’re blocking the road!”
Seeing the star, his eyes popped out;
He forgot why he was running and just hopped about.
A snake slithered along the ground,
Didn’t notice the star, the cat or the hound;
Wanting the toad for a midnight snack,
Bumped her nose on the star with a loud KER- SMACK!
Suddenly, a bear rumbled onto the site,
“Where’s that hare I was just about to bite?”
Saw the star then huffed, “Why are you lying there?”
“Go back where you belong -- up in the air!”
Timidly, the hare hopped around little star;
“You’re as pretty up close as you are from afar.”
“I’m scared you’ll burn out! Oh, what can we do?”
“There must be a way that we can save you!”
The dog barked at the cat who screeched at the bear;
The snake hissed at the toad who croaked at the hare.
Little star cried out, “Help me return to the sky!”
“Stop fighting…work together. You have to try!”
“Make a wish, and mean it, from deep in your heart;”
“Wish me back home, it’s the best place to start!”
The dog wished with the cat who wished with the bear;
The snake wished with the toad who wished with the hare.
Suddenly, the wind with a forceful sound,
Lifted little star up off of the ground!
With a “whoosh” and a “swoosh” it started to rise,
Making the animals stop and stare in surprise.
“Don’t stop, it’s working, can't you see,”
“Your hearts have the power to set me free!”
So again the animals wished little star home,
“Back to family and friends…be no longer alone."
