Alone, cold, nowhere to call home.
Free to go where he wishes.
Sad, he wishes to go home.
He passes a barking dog in a yard.
The master comes out of the house and yells at him,
“Get out of here you mangy mutt!”
Nose twitching as wonderful smells drift from a pie in a window.
The Mistress comes out and yells at him,
“Go away you little thief.”
He remembers when he used to bark at others,
When he was given a piece of pie,
When he had a family.
But something happened.
They packed up and turned him out of the house.
Drove away and left him in the rain.
He waited by the door.
But they didn’t come back.
He tried to look for them.
He never found them.
Now he looks for food and water.
At night he searches for a place to sleep.
No warm bed for him.
Cold, he curls up under a tree.
This morning the big metal monster is picking up colorful bins.
A bag falls out, garbage scatters.
It’s a good day to find food.
He picks through the trash.
He finds a bun and a fry.
Yum!
He looks up and sees a woman across the street.
She is pushing her garbage bins back into her yard.
He can smell her from here.
She smells nice.
He runs up to her.
His tail wagging .
Most people chase him away.
She holds out her hand to him.
He sniffs it.
He likes it.
She looks at him.
Where’s your family?
He looks at her
Afraid to move.
Afraid to scare her
Afraid she will yell at him.
Don’t shoo me away!
She sees his dirty coat.
It’s okay little one.
She rubs his head.
His eyes close in enjoyment.
Something blooms in her heart,
She calls him to follow her.
She gives him water and food.
She gives him a warm bed for the night.
She takes him to the pet store.
Someone must be looking for him,
But no one is.
She takes him to the vet.
Someone must be looking for him,
But no one is.
She looks at all the Lost Pet posters.
Someone must be looking for him,
But no one is.
She calls him Spenser.
He calls her Salty.
He likes to lick her hand.
Sometimes he wonders if she will leave.
Especially on rainy days.
He behaves.
He doesn’t bark.
He licks her hand.
She feeds him.
She gives him toys.
And takes him for walks on the beach
Time passes...
One day,
He is standing in his yard.
Something blooms in his heart.
His yard.
A cat passes the gate.
Suddenly he barks!
He tells the cat.
This is my home!
He sees a squirrel in the tree.
And barks!
This is my home!
Salty comes out of the house.
He looks at her.
Spenser is that you?
He barks!
This is my yard!
He barks!
This is my home!
He barks!
This is love!
He barks!
She smiles.
He is proud enough to bark.
Free to go where he wishes.
Sad, he wishes to go home.
